Such Great Heights

I thought that I had heard about every conceivable cycling subculture.   Roadies, Time trialists, Endurance racers, Randonneurs, Mountain Bikers, 29’ers, Couriers, Commuters, Freak Bikers, Single-speeders, Fixed gearies, Retro-grouches, Cyclocrossers, BMXers, Unicyclers…

Then I hear about this group – Le Club des Cent Cols.  These guys collect mountain passes.  Obsessive, non?

Never to be outdone by France, the great state of Maine should have it’s own version of the game.  We may not have the Alps or the Pyrenees, but we do have some wicked nice firetowers to collect…

I hereby initiate The 100 Firetower Club.  The goal is to visit the site of 100 of the 143 documented firetowers in the state.

To get you started, here’s some info about the two towers within easy riding distance from Portland:  Ossipee Hill and Atherton Hill.  Bon route!
